CLUB DAY 2010 – Great success

Following on from the success of La nag Club 2009 the GAA plans to celebrate the importance of the Club in the community again this year on Sunday 9th May. The theme for this year’s day was the promotion of ‘Youth through Volunteerism” and we had arranged a wide programme of events for all the family, both on the pitch and off, in St Malachy’s Park. Everyone was invited to come along and join in as the fun started at 10:15. The day was finished off by Finbar Keaveney who performed in the Club later that night. The wonderful dancing skills of Rory McCabe and Mickey Keown were sight for sore eyes.

Well done to Brian Dougherty ably assisted by Francie McAlinden and Barney Cunnnigham who organized and ran the days events, and also to Ollie Doyle, PJ Maguire, Fintan McGreevey and Danny Keown who operated the barbeque all day. Also thanks to Ciaran Crilly and Cillian Keaveney for the use of their Clio’s for the car pulling event. Cillians car was notably heavier than Ciarans probably due to the fact that Ciarans had no petrol in it ! !

11.30am – 11year olds to 16year olds. 4 pitches.

MATCH REPORTS

East Down U16 League Castlewellan 4-13 St. Paul’s 2-6

The final score line in this well contested U16 League Game, which took place in perfect conditions in Annsborough on Sunday, does no justice to a strong, skilful and well organised St Paul’s Team who dominated the early stages of this game, and battled throughout to regain the initiative after a well placed pass from Conall Crilly put Martin Brannigan through late in the first half for a well taken goal, which resulted in Castlewellan going in with a 1 point lead which they scarcely deserved.

The game commenced with St Paul’s dominating and moving into a three point lead, before Captain Mathew Stratton registered Castlewellan’s first score with a well taken free. St Paul’s strong running centre half forward was causing the Castlewellan defence all sorts of problems and despite the best efforts of Conall Corrigan he added two more points, before Stratton added a second point from a free awarded when he was fouled after an inspirational run through the St Paul’s defence. At this stage Castlewellan were in danger of being over run and would have been much further behind but for the brave interceptions of Conan Brogan and the intelligent reading of the game by Sean Hardy at full back, not to mention two magnificent saves by Sean Dornan in goals. Stephen Connolly and Captain Stratton were winning their share of the ball at midfield but wasteful finishing by Crilly, Brannigan and Cahal Óg Keown before Stratton added his third point after another strong run through the middle, left Castlewellan 2 down with three minutes to halftime. In the final minute Brannigans goal allowed Castlewellan to go in with that one point lead.

Who knows what was said by the extremely animated Castlewellan management Team at half time, but it certainly worked. Shortly after the restart Martin Brannigan ran straight at the St. Paul’s defence rounding two men before he slotted a fine left footed drive to the bottom corner of the net. This was quickly followed by an inspirational individual goal from Stratton who won the ball at midfield and following a forty metre run smashed the ball into the roof of the St Paul’s net. At this stage Castlewellan were rampant as Crilly. Brannigan and McCartan in the half forward line took control. In a fifteen minute period they added seven points from play, three each from Martin Brannigan and Stratton, and a fine left footed point from Conall Corrigan.

A brave St Paul’s team regrouped and pulled two goals back and indeed could have scored four but for another fine save from Dornan and a clever interception from Paul King. Castlewellan added a further two points from Martin Brannigan and one from Stratton during this period, to keep the game safe. In the final minutes, following a point from St Paul’s, Rossa McCartan and substitute Neill McAleenan combined, after Pauric Hardy had worked hard to dispossess a St Paul’s defender, to set Cahal Óg Keown up to flick the fourth goal to the net. Keown’s aerial dominance was a feature of Castlewellan’s play during the second half when he give an exhibition of high fielding and clever passing to set up a number of those second half scores for his team mates.

Overall this was a strong and hard working performance by a talented Castlewellan team. All twenty players contributed to this victory, but much work still needs to be done by players and management alike to improve their fitness and teamwork if the Town are to capture any silverware this year.

Man of the match was certainly Mathew Stratton, but he was closely followed by Martin Brannigan and Conan Brogan.

Ritchie Power -

It was a great honour for Castlewellan to have Ritchie Power in attendance at our juvenile presentation night. Ritchie also found time out to take a training session on Saturday morning for some of the U14 & U16 boys.

Club

Ritchie Power played his club hurling with his local Carrickshock club, however, he never won a senior county title.

Inter-county

He first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Kilkenny minor hurling team. He won a Leinster title in this grade in 1975 before later winning an All-Ireland medal following a victory over Cork. He later joined the county under-21 team and won both Leinster and All-Ireland honours in 1977.

He later joined the Kilkenny senior team and won a National Hurling League medal in 1982. He later won his first Leinster title before making a first All-Ireland final appearance. Cork were the opponents that day, however, the Leesiders provided little opposition and Power won his first senior All-Ireland medal. His performance throughout the championship later earned Power a coveted All-Star award. In 1983 he won a second consecutive National League medal before later collecting a second provincial title. Cork were Kilkenny’s opponents again in the championship decider and, once again, the Leesiders fell to ‘the Cats’ giving Power a second All-Ireland medal. Kilkenny lost their provincial crown for the next few years, however, the team returned in 1986 with Power winning a third National League medal. He later picked up a third Leinster medal, however, his side were later defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. In spite of this loss he still collected a second All-Star award. In 1987 Power added a fourth Leinster medal to his collection. Kilkenny later reached the All-Ireland final, however, the side were defeated by Galway once again. Three years later in 1990 Ritchie won a fourth National League medal and in 1991 he collected a fifth and final Leinster title. He later played Tipp in a final All-Ireland final appearance, however, he ended up on the losing side on that occasion. Ritchie retired from inter-county hurling following this defeat.

Under 8 Hurling blitz

The youngest group of Hurlers in Castlewellan GAC took part in a mini-blitz on Saturday at St. Malachy’s High School and everyone enjoyed a great morning of indoor Hurling with the emphasis on fun and participation. There were many notable performances and scores a plenty. Parents and mentors were delighted with the enthusiasm and skill on display and all are already looking forward to the next event. Every boy played in three games and the morning finished with a session of ‘helter skelter’. Thanks to St Malachy’s HS for the excellent facilities and to the local primary schools for advertising the event. The boys will continue to work on their Hurling and Football skills as usual every Monday night in the high school at 6.00 where they follow the GAA fundamentals programme. New players always welcome. Each player will be presented with a medal at the club under age prize night this Friday.
